YOU ROCK!!!!!!!
Last night, I had a dream.
An old, grumpy, crooked, shortsighted, and cruel man awoke this morning, shocked and chagrined after a night of visits from three ghosts. The first was the Ghost of Elections Past, what was: 2016, 2020, and 2024. The second was the Ghost of Elections Present, what happened: 2026. And finally came the Ghost of Elections Yet to Come, what could be: 2028, 2032, and beyond.
In my dream, the old man went to his office the next morning with a newfound awareness of opportunities missed and opportunities still ahead. He made the extraordinary leap from self-interest to doing what was best for his family, employees, friends, those in need, and, yes, even himself. And those whom he had ignored, insulted, and abused were ready, willing, and even excited to embrace his transformation. Together, they moved forward, making their world a better place.
It was only a dream. Most would probably call it a delusional hallucination. But what if…?
Whatever the old man chooses to do, our new Congress, with the limited powers it commands, must govern in the spirit of what those three ghosts revealed.
The task is not to torture, humiliate, or punish the old man and his gang. The task is to govern America. Within the constraints of our constitutional system of three branches of government and its separation of powers, Congress must act on behalf of Americans who need governmental support, protection, and opportunity. Equally important is the task of reestablishing a national environment grounded in the rule of law, where every person is treated fairly, where due process is respected, and where government serves the people rather than those who temporarily occupy positions of power.
We do not need investigations designed merely to punish or embarrass the old man and his associates. We need investigations that establish what went wrong, how abuses occurred, and what institutional reforms are necessary to prevent their recurrence. Accountability should serve a larger purpose: correcting the abuses we have witnessed, restoring public trust, and protecting the integrity of the people’s government. We must also do what we can to restore comity among elected officials, not for the sake of appearances, but for the purpose of legislating effectively for the American people.
There are urgent issues demanding attention: tariffs, particularly those imposed on Canada; the war with Iran; immigration enforcement; and the broader consequences of policies that have damaged our relationships abroad while imposing real costs on Americans at home. Meaningful and lasting solutions will require cooperation between the parties, however difficult that may seem today.
This is an opportunity for progress, not merely political revenge.
What we witnessed in this election was not an overwhelming expression of enthusiasm for Democrats. It was, instead, a repudiation of grift, cruelty, abuses of power, and disastrous trade and foreign policies that have harmed Middle America and diminished America’s standing in the world.
All the paid political advertising in the world cannot put food on the table, gasoline in the car, or restore decency to public life. Political slogans cannot substitute for competent governance, and personal loyalty to a leader cannot replace loyalty to the Constitution and the country. We saw that message in Hungary’s rebuke of its authoritarian leadership, and we saw it again last night in America. The question now is whether those entrusted with governing will recognize the opportunity before them.
Perhaps the old man will never change. Perhaps my dream really was a delusional hallucination. But the opportunity for America to change course is real.
We cannot rewrite the elections of the past. We can learn from the election of the present. And we can shape the elections, and the country, yet to come.
That, after all, was the lesson of the three ghosts.
