TAPA # 246 LIPSTICK FOR A PIG???

Trump has an extraordinary ability to create problems, blame everyone else for them, and somehow persuade people to believe him. I watched his rally in Syracuse, my hometown, with particular interest. Many in the crowd came for the spectacle. Some traveled from out of state, while others were local residents who, still blind to the obvious, continue to swallow Trump’s lies. His speech was an 80-minute diatribe about everything wrong with everyone else and how wonderful the world would be if only it saw things his way. It would have been laughable were it not for the suffering he is inflicting on people and the damage he is doing to America’s institutions, reputation, and standing in the world.

The president of the United States stood before a crowd of Americans and called a state attorney general, who happens to be a Black woman, a “dog.” Trump demonstrates neither self-respect nor respect for the dignity of the office he holds or the people he was elected to serve. The encouraging news is that many of those who put him in office appear finally to be recognizing their mistake. Then came Trump’s pronouncement that Ukraine needs a new president. The sheer absurdity of that statement makes the old expression “putting lipstick on a pig” seem woefully inadequate. Even lipstick on a pig’s backside wouldn’t begin to disguise the hypocrisy and lunacy of such a declaration coming from Trump.

His attempt to blame Ukraine for rising diesel prices is equally outrageous. Using that claim as a pretext to advance the interests of his comrade and fellow authoritarian, Putin, raises profound questions about Trump’s judgment, competence, and loyalty to America’s national security interests. Such conduct should provoke serious consideration of constitutional remedies: the 25th Amendment, if he is genuinely unbalanced or incompetent to discharge the duties of his office, or impeachment if his actions constitute an abuse of presidential power that threatens the security of the United States and our allies.

Make no mistake: the current congressional majority has repeatedly demonstrated its willingness to excuse, defend, and enable his conduct. Expecting them to hold him accountable is like expecting an accomplice to prosecute the crime. The only realistic path to reclaiming America is through the ballot box: removing the MAGA majority and replacing them with representatives who recognize that their oath is to the Constitution, not to Trump.

America’s democracy, our security, and our standing in the world are too important to remain hostage to one man’s lunacy and a congressional majority unwilling to confront him.
