He suppressed the free press, saturated public life with propaganda, demanded personal allegiance, subordinated the courts, stripped the legislature of its authority, and used police power to crush civil and human rights. No, not Trump, Adolf Hitler.
His destruction of democracy should serve as a warning: institutions cannot protect a nation when those entrusted with defending them surrender to one man. Trump’s attacks on constitutional restraints point in a dangerous direction, while America’s institutions of law hang on by their fingertips.
American voters handed Trump a Cadillac. He has treated it as a source of spare parts to enrich himself, his family, and his friends. The tires have been traded away, the upholstery shredded, the windows smashed, and the gas tank nearly emptied. The engine still runs, but the machinery of our democracy desperately needs repair.
Today’s weak jobs report and uptick in unemployment sharpen the contrast between political promises and the pressures ordinary Americans face, people outside Trump’s circle of jesters, congressional loyalists, and corporate executives.
Recall what Trump told us in 2018: “And just remember: What you’re seeing and what you’re reading is not what’s happening.” That invitation to distrust our own eyes is the Republican platform for the midterms.
But eventually reality always wins. We can deny it, avoid it, or fight it; we cannot escape its consequences. Americans are feeling those consequences in their household budgets, their job searches, and their uncertainty about the future.
America’s integrity has been compromised. Our alliances are in tatters. Working families struggle to pay the bills while the wealthy accumulate still more.
To repair the car and strengthen its chassis, we need capable mechanics: problem solvers committed to salvaging our country, rather than the current leaders intent on savaging it.
Vote for change. Vote for integrity. Vote for leaders who face reality, and work to improve it.
RESIST!!! & EDUCATE!!!
