THE AMERICAN POSEIDON ADVENTURE

As I’ve watched the sparring between Canadian and American leaders, the contrast could not be more bold or stark. The Canadians speak with dignity, purpose, and principle. The Americans seem addled, sleazy, and devoid of integrity.

The Canadians are defending their country, their sovereignty, with dignity. We Americans, on the other hand, appear as bullies, embracing a “might makes right” approach, behaving boorishly, detached from reality, and petulantly childlike as our leaders try to explain away an emperor who has no clothes. It is embarrassing, disheartening, and unquestionably harmful to our relationship with Canada. Worse, the lies and distortions stain our nation’s image and integrity before the world. President Reagan famously described America, a “shining city upon a hill.” Today, to much of the world, and to many of her own citizens, America increasingly looks like a humiliated bum in a ditch.

It will take time to heal and rebuild what has been, and continues to be, damaged. The only thing Trump has conclusively demonstrated is how easy it is to destroy or tear down institutions, alliances, trust, and respect that took generations to build. The White House and Reflecting Pool are two concrete examples! We can only hope the adage that “time heals” proves true.

As things stand, we potentially face two more years of this petulant, pudgy orange genius as president. If we are to at least slow the destruction, we desperately need a Congress with the will to govern and with the interests of the American people, not Donald Trump, at heart.

It is simply unbelievable that there has been no serious effort either to begin impeachment proceedings or to invoke the 25th Amendment as a means of protecting the country. The unwillingness of Congress even to confront the question speaks volumes about how thoroughly political loyalty has replaced constitutional responsibility. That fact alone is reason enough to throw every MAGA enabler out of Congress.

The picture coming from Canada could hardly be clearer: one government defending its nation with dignity and purpose, while ours increasingly embarrasses the country it is supposed to represent.

Let’s hope American voters see the contrast just as clearly.
