ATTENTION OR ACHTUNG???

“We can only lose the midterms if we allow ourselves to lose the midterms, if we are foolish, stupid, and unwise.”Donald Trump at Mount Rushmore, discussing the midterm elections and suggesting that any Republican loss would be the fault of his supporters, not his own.

“The German people demonstrated that they were the weaker people and did not deserve to survive.” Hitler’s reported explanation to Albert Speer as he ordered a scorched-earth strategy and issued the Decree Concerning Demolitions in the Reich Territory on March 19, 1945, when he knew Germany was defeated, little more than a month before he killed himself and his new wife.

The Third Reich was not ultimately about rebuilding Germany or restoring a glorious past that would endure for a thousand years. It was about Hitler’s vanity, his lust for power, and his personal gratification.

So, as we watch Trump blame everyone but himself for his gargantuan failures in the economy, foreign affairs, human rights, while the country sinks deeper into debt, millions of Americans struggle to make ends meet, and we endure a disastrous war driven by Trump’s vanity, it is worth asking: Is “Make America Great Again” really about us?

America has become an international spectacle as our president twists in the wind at the end of Putin’s pole. American soldiers have died, our international standing has deteriorated, and Trump continues becoming richer while the public picks up the tab.

What does it say when, as one commentator put it, “many Americans cannot even afford to go to the emergency room to get help for the diarrhea caused by our tainted lettuce”?

It says we need a government that cares about the governed, versus those doing the governing.

We need leaders, not followers of factually discredited ideas that represent more of an attitude than a coherent policy. Policy is consistent, deliberate, and reasonably predictable. An attitude changes with the opinion, grievance, or impulse of the person holding power at any particular moment. That is no way to govern a country, and, as Trump’s business history has repeatedly illustrated, it is no way to run an enterprise either.

A vote for a MAGA supporter is ultimately a vote for the man who, when his decisions fail, wants to blame you for his mistakes, and your misery.
