Last week, in compliance with a court order that ruled placing Trump’s name on the Kennedy Center was illegal and required it to be removed by Friday, Trump’s people finally complied, after much haranguing. But they complied in a manner perfectly illustrative of Trump’s immature, self-aggrandizing, and often ludicrous behavior: they erected a tarp so no one could see the name coming down.
A truly effective gesture, if the goal was self-delusion. The nation knows what is going on behind the curtain. Yet, as Trump has so often implied, he seems to believe Americans should “not believe their lying eyes.” Apparently, if we can’t see it, we won’t believe it.
Any self-respecting American with half, no a quarter, of a mature brain knows the letters have come down. The curtain itself is symbolic of Trump’s preferred reality: distract, deceive, bait-and-switch, or simply lie, lie, lie, and then lie again until enough people accept fiction as fact. I actually laughed when I saw workers put up the curtain and then construct a separate access structure so people could still enter the building. Apparently, Trumpy Dumpty intends to keep the curtain standing.
Listening to Trump’s claims about Iran’s “unconditional surrender” and comparing them with reality, it would be fitting to hang the so-called Iran deal behind that same curtain. After all, it is not a peace agreement but merely a cease-fire, one that leaves the United States confronting problems made worse by Trump’s own actions. It belongs in the world of Donald’s fantasy, where he is king and everyone bows before his supposedly unmatched wisdom, brilliance, and oversized butt.
The curtain and the Iran deal are products of the same mindset: a man who sees his own well-being as paramount. The desecration of the Kennedy Center and the Iran conflict were both expressions of a self-centered egomaniac seeking adoration, attention, and profit. A man willing to break norms, spend taxpayer money on self-promotion, endanger lives, and ask others to sacrifice their sons, but never his own.
As the old song asks:
“Where have all the flowers gone?”
In Trump’s wallet.
“When will we ever learn? When will we ever learn?”
