Texas remains Republican-leaning overall, but Democrats make up a very large minority of the state and dominate several major urban counties including Harris (Houston), Dallas and Travis (Austin), along with increasingly competitive suburban regions.

Trump’s endorsement of Paxton for the U.S. Senate was not surprising. Birds of a feather, as they say. Trump is a convicted felon with a long history of sordid and unethical behavior. Paxton has faced multiple indictments and scandals of his own, though he ultimately avoided conviction. His wife has now filed for what was described as a “biblical” divorce. One could reasonably argue that Trump’s personal history would have presented similar grounds for Melania long ago.

What was more surprising was the overwhelming rejection of the sitting senator, John Cornyn. Apparently, Cornyn’s relative lack of public scandal and criminal controversy made him insufficiently loyal for Trump’s politics of personal servitude. Ironically, while Cornyn often bent himself into knots supporting Trump and voted with him the vast majority of the time, apparently many MAGA Republican primary voters still viewed him as disloyal.

What especially caught my attention was the turnout numbers. Democratic turnout reportedly exceeded Republican turnout by roughly two to one, which may suggest that many Texans are increasingly disengaged from, or dissatisfied with, the current Republican direction and performance. Others may simply have felt uninspired by either Republican option.

Texas has more than 31 million people. In any large population there will always be up to a 4% deviancy. Occam’s Razor may offer the simplest explanation for the Paxton vote. Still, Texans are generally practical and intelligent people, and I hope they will not allow themselves to be duped for a third time.

Trump has once more shown he has no loyalty to anyone, except his pocketbook, including America. Paxton is the equivalent of the Herschal Walker candidacy in Georgia. Paxton is an affront to most peoples’ sense of integrity and intelligence.
