THE AMERICAN POSEIDON ADVENTURE

All I can think of when I listen to Republicans, or read newspaper reports about Trump’s newest scam flowing dollars into his pocket, or into the pockets of people he believes will help funnel even more money into his pocket, is the word “patsy.” That is what many Republican MAGAs have become.

Trump began his retribution tour by targeting the institutions of government. Now he is inflicting it on his own party, like a circular firing squad. The Supreme Court’s penchant for looking backward rendered decisions that are decimating to the present. And the Republican-led Congress, cowed by personal ambition and fearful of Trump’s political power, helped steer our ship of state into the mud and barnacles where Trump thrives, a course that ultimately may sink them as well.

If this were a modern version of All in the Family, with Trump playing Archie Bunker and the Louisiana “worm” playing Meathead, it might actually be entertaining. Last month I spent two weeks in Japan. One person told me, “Every day on Japanese television there is a local story, and then some silly new thing Trump is doing.” From a distance, they see Trump’s antics as a joke and him as a clown.

Stupidity and crass, immoral behavior can appear comical from afar, like watching someone stroll toward what they think is a honey pot, only to discover it is a hornets’ nest. Watching the fools stick their hands into the nest, then stumble, run, and scream for help can seem funny at a distance. But when you are standing inside the swarm, wondering why nobody is doing anything about it, there is nothing funny about it. There is only pain, anger, and danger.

Eventually the hornets will exhaust themselves, as may the MAGA wasps, (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants?). The hope is that there will still be survivors when it ends.

I believe the only way to survive is to vote.
