TAPA # 186 A FOOL’S ERRAND

Well, I didn’t get a “TACO” from Trump, arguably the least bad option for the global economy. Instead, April Fool’s Day delivered a ‘fool of fools’ speech that was disjointed, convoluted, contradictory, and saturated with lies and distortions. In other words, the same old routine.

We were told the Strait of Hormuz would “open naturally.” But it didn’t close naturally and Iran has made clear it intends to monitor passage, only deepening the economic uncertainty Trump has helped ignite.

What we are witnessing is a cascade of events he cannot control. Threats to “bomb Iran back to the Stone Age” sound less like strategy and more like a playground tantrum from a bully who didn’t get his way. The result: a more dangerous world, a diminished United States, and an embarrassment on the global stage. It is sobering and frankly sad to see this “Richie Rich” caricature occupying the presidency.

Last Saturday, we attended a family event in Pennsylvania and found a “NO KINGS” rally in Yardley. More than 500 people gathered in this small town, many holding blunt, unfiltered signs aimed at what they see as reckless leadership. It was, in its own way, heartening, a reminder that most Americans still believe in the ideals that define this country.

Speakers pointed to recent court decisions pushing back against executive overreach. Decisions that drew strong applause. The judiciary appears to be holding firm to the Constitution, standing as the one branch where facts and law still carry weight. Meanwhile, a Republican-controlled Congress looks increasingly like a runaway bus, careening downhill, unwilling or unable to fulfill its constitutional responsibilities.

Democrats are far from flawless and have made their share of mistakes. But in this moment, they represent the only viable path to preserving the rule of law.

The message of this April Fool’s Day was clear: a vote for Republicans is a fool’s errand.
