The Save America Act is a desperate attempt by Republicans to stem the political damage caused by Trump. But remember what “America” means to him. He said we shouldn’t worry about rising oil prices because “we make more money.” That “we” refers to those who live off investments, not the majority of Americans who rely on weekly paychecks and will bear the burden.
This is not an argument against voter ID in principle. But this version is rushed into effect immediately, without regard for real-world consequences. Senator Murkowski has already warned of the impact on Alaskans, many of whom will not have sufficient time to obtain the required documentation before the next election. For working people, the hurdles are significant: taking time off work, paying for travel, covering document fees, and replacing lost records like birth certificates.
Even more concerning, the Act would grant federal authorities expanded access to voter rolls, opening the door to partisan manipulation in jurisdictions deemed politically vulnerable. Meanwhile, there remains no, none, nada, credible evidence of widespread voter fraud in the United States.
If a voter ID law is to be fair, maintain mail-in voting, and voter rolls should remain under state control, as the Constitution intends. Adequate time, at least one full election cycle, should be provided for compliance, and any costs imposed on already registered voters should be covered by the government.
